VETERANS BANNER PROGRAM
The City of Moose Jaw Heritage Advisory Committee is proud to launch the “Veterans Banner Program” in 2023. This initiative has been successful in many communities in Canada and provides an opportunity to recognize our local community members who have served our great country while acknowledging the sacrifices they have made so we can continue to enjoy the freedoms we have today.
As part of this project, a maximum of 40 “Veterans Banners” will be strategically placed on streetlight poles along Main Street and in the downtown core for the month of November.
The specific objectives and goals of the program are:
- to engage our community in honouring our local veterans, both past and present, in a colorful and vibrant way as we move towards Remembrance Day;
- to help promote remembrance in our community;
- to help educate students and citizens on the faces and stories of the service of our Veterans; and
- to help ensure recognition and remembrance in our future generations.
The program is an initiative of the City’s Heritage Advisory Committee and is supported by the City of Moose Jaw, the Royal Canadian Legion, ANAVETS and the Saskatchewan Dragoons.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Who is allowed to be portrayed on the banners?
Any veteran can be portrayed on the banners. A veteran is any person who is currently serving or who has honourably served in the Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth, or its wartime allies, or as a Peace Officer in a special duty area or on a special duty operation, or who has served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime. The person must have some connection to Moose Jaw or surrounding area. (Born, grew up here, or lived here)
Note: if the veteran is still living, they must provide consent.
Who is allowed to sponsor/purchase a banner and how much does it cost?
Any individual, family, organization, or company may purchase a banner on behalf of a veteran. Each banner will cost $330.00 and will be displayed for a 3-year term. Cost includes the production of the banner, shipping, and the annual installation and removal of the banners.
Banner Ownership
The veteran banners purchased/sponsored by individuals, families, organizations, or companies will become property of the City of Moose Jaw Heritage Advisory Committee for the 3-year term. Upon conclusion of the term, banners will be returned to the original purchaser/sponsor.
The City of Moose Jaw and the Heritage Advisory Committee will be responsible for producing the banner, ensuring banners are put in place in the lead-up to each Remembrance Day, taken down, cleaned, and placed in storage.
Photo Requirements
Applicants are asked to provide a high-resolution photo (300 dpi or greater for a 3” x 5” or larger photo) of the veteran in uniform (if possible) that can be enlarged to fit on a banner.
Please click on the link below for further information on the photo requirements.
HOW TO GET THE BEST POSSIBLE PHOTOS
Digital images are preferred; however, physical photos are permitted. They will be scanned in high-resolution to be used for the banner. Physical photos will be returned to the applicant once scanned.
What does the banner look like?
All the banners will have the same uniform design. See samples below.
How many banners will be installed on streetlight poles?
A maximum of 40 veteran banners will be placed on street light poles in 2023. Applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. If the program sells out this year, we will explore opportunities for additional banners in subsequent years.
Can I choose what streetlight my banner goes on?
Regretfully not. Individual banner locations may change from year to year. Given the number of banners and complexity of installing/removing banners each year, it would be very time consuming to cater to individual wishes.
When will the banners be displayed?
Banners will be displayed for the month of November each year.
What happens to the banners after they are taken down for the year?
The banners will be removed from the streetlights by City crews and cleaned and stored by the Heritage Advisory Committee. Applicants will be contacted following their 3-year term to coordinate pickup of the banner.
What happens if the banners are damaged or lost during the 3-year term?
The banners are made from very durable material which should minimize weather damage. Moose Jaw however is prone to many windstorms during the month of November and if a banner is lost or damaged, the Heritage Advisory Committee will explore options with the applicant to purchase a new one at the applicant’s cost.
