Private Planting In Public Open Space

Application Private Plantings in Public Open Space

The City of Moose Jaw will permit individuals or groups, following approval, to plant trees or shrubs on public green space at their own cost and maintenance.

To Apply:
If you would like to plant trees or shrubs on City property, you are required to submit a written request with a plan drawing (to scale) to the Parks and Recreation Department. Staff will review the plans to ensure the design complies with set-back requirements and that there are no conflicts with future plans since these plantings will become City property.

Your proposed planting design should meet the following guidelines:

  • The City will not be responsible for any costs associated with the installation of the plants.
  • All underground utilities must be located prior to any digging.
  • Watering and maintenance will be your responsibility for the first 3 years. After the 3 years, the City of Moose Jaw will incorporate the planting in our regular maintenance program.
  • To reduce mortality rates, your tree must have a diameter of 40mm for deciduous trees or be 1.2 m height if you are planting coniferous trees.
  • You cannot plant a tree in drainage ditches and swales or on dikes.
  • You cannot plant your private tree within a pipeline corridor due to the hazards it creates.
  • Your plan’s layout design shall be harmonious with the context of the site (e.g. buffer or park space) and should not give the perception of being an extension of your private space.
