The City of Moose Jaw continues to make strong progress toward our Climate Action Plan goals with measurable reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water waste across municipal facilities.
In 2024, we achieved a total corporate GHG emissions reduction of 11.2% compared to our 2019 baseline. This puts us over halfway toward our 2025 target of a 20% reduction. In addition, we’ve made remarkable progress in water conservation, reaching our goal of zero water waste at the City’s 10 largest facilities, which account for nearly half of total corporate emissions.
Key 2024 Accomplishments:
- Energy Efficiency Upgrades:
- 38 low and no-cost energy conservation activities implemented to date, with 15 more underway.
- LED lighting retrofits and equipment scheduling changes have saved 496,000 kWh and reduced emissions by 366 tonnes CO₂e in 2024.
- The Hoffman Blower House upgrade continues to generate significant annual reductions—847 tonnes CO₂e saved annually.
- Renewable Energy Generation:
- Three municipal solar projects generated 297,609 kWh of electricity in 2024, contributing to a 1.02% reduction in corporate emissions.
- Water Conservation:
- Installation of real-time water sub-monitoring across all 10 key facilities.
- Detection and resolution of 12 leak scenarios, preventing over 5.1 million litres of water waste.
- Annualized savings equivalent to 12.2% of baseline water consumption.
- Natural Gas Monitoring:
- Full integration of real-time gas sub-monitoring systems completed in 2024.
- Natural gas use has gone down 16.3% since 2019, contributing to an additional 3.0% reduction in total corporate emissions.
- Public Engagement:
- Public-facing digital dashboards have been updated with live energy and water data at major City facilities.
- These tools help share our sustainability journey with the community.
- Smart Maintenance and Alerts:
- Predictive maintenance and real-time alerting (software) are being implemented to improve equipment performance and safety.
Looking Ahead to 2025
In 2025, we will:
- Prioritize capital energy upgrades based on return on investment and GHG reduction impact.
- Expand use of predictive maintenance and real-time alerting systems.
- Continue exploring grant and financing opportunities to support sustainable infrastructure.
- Keep residents informed and engaged through enhanced public dashboards and messaging from the City Council.
We remain committed to achieving our 2025 target of 20% GHG reduction and progressing toward our 2030 goal of 45% reduction, while maintaining zero water waste.
