Moose Jaw, SK – The City of Moose Jaw’s Water Main Replacement Program has wrapped up for 2020.

City Council approved four water main replacement locations for 2020, with a fifth location approved in June.

“We’re pleased to report that well over 90% of planned and added water main construction was completed this year,” said Jim Puffalt, City Manager. “That’s significantly more water main replacement than we have traditionally completed in a single construction season. This progress was made possible by a number of operational changes.”

Those changes include:

  • In-House Engineering Design.
  • City Council approved the 2021 Budget last December, which allowed the City to begin the Tender process earlier than in previous years.
  • Organizational Renewal which provided a change in focus of the Engineering Department to Capital construction. Maintenance was transferred to the new Public Works & Utilties Department.

“We commend the excellent planning and execution by our Engineering Services department, in conjunction with the contractors,” Puffalt continued. “We also thank Council for approving the additional location (2nd Avenue NW between Manitoba St. and Fairford St.), which included aesthetic enhancements from our Downtown Local Area Plan. Our objective is to complete all required City infrastructure construction at a selected location at one time.”

The following is a  complete look at every 2020 Water Main Replacement location, including any outstanding work that will be completed in 2021:

3rd Ave NW between Oxford St. W and Macdonald St. W (670 metres): All underground work is complete. Paving on the 1000 block is complete, with bottom lift of asphalt completed on the 1100 and 1200 blocks. All traffic restrictions have been removed, and the top lift of asphalt will be completed in 2021. Additional concrete work will be completed in 2021 to address some sidewalks and abandoned infrastrcture left in existing panels. There will also be water main replacement construction on the north half of the 1200 block completed in 2021. Affected residents have been advised of this work.

600-1000 Blocks Stadacona St. E (790 metres): Water main replacement construction is officially complete between the 600-900 blocks. The City of Moose Jaw, in consultation with NIS Contractors Ltd., made the decision to postpone water main replacement on the 900 block of Stadacona St. E until the start of 2021 construction season.

0-300 blocks High Street West (540 metres), 0-200 blocks Fairford St. E (560 metres) and 2nd Ave NW between Manitoba St. and Fairford St. (335 metres): Fully complete.
