MOOSE JAW – After 35+ years of service, Senior Captain Bill Howes of the Moose Jaw Fire Department (MJFD) will officially retire Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Bill was hired for the position of Firefighter on April 3, 1989.  He was promoted to Shift Captain on October 1, 2016, and went to his current position as Senior Captain on June 26, 2020.

Throughout Bill’s 35+ years career he continued to uphold his exemplary conduct as a role model and mentor for his peers and especially the new recruits.  Everyone readily followed his lead on the fire ground, doing property inspections, training or just general maintenance of the fire apparatus and the fire halls. He was always the first to help his peers at work or his family, friends, and neighbours on his days off.

“Whether working as a Firefighter, Officer or Union Executive, Bill’s work ethic was exceptional, and he fulfilled these roles with passion and dedication,” explained Rod Montgomery, Fire Chief.

“Bill’s many years as a Firefighter, then as an Officer were outstanding and were evident in the respect, he had from the MJFD Administration and his fellow members. Senior Captain “Billy” Howes’ easy-going personality and big welcoming grin will be missed by all of us,” said Chief Montgomery.

The Fire Department and the City of Moose Jaw would like to thank Bill for his many years of service and wish him all the best in his retirement.
