MOOSE JAW – For the 2nd straight year, the City of Moose Jaw and SGI’s “Wing In the New Year” program saw a significant increase in ridership.

The annual program, which just celebrated its 31st year, allows anyone to ride Moose Jaw transit for free from 7:55 p.m. New Year’s Eve through 3:15 a.m. New Year’s morning.

Designed to offer those celebrating the New Year a safe, free transportation alternative, 143 riders took advantage of the program in Moose Jaw to ring in 2020, an increase of 64% (56 riders) from 87 that used the service to celebrate the start of 2019. 37 riders took advantage of the program as part of 2018 New Year celebrations.

“We’re thrilled with our ‘Wing In The New Year” attendance numbers, which speak to the value of having a free, safe, transportation alternative,” said Moose Jaw Mayor Fraser Tolmie. “We thank SGI for sponsoring the service, and we thank our Transit drivers for working on a night when others celebrate with family and friends.”

A new initiative for the program this year was the implementation of a contest. Anyone who took a picture during their safe ride on Moose Jaw Transit and used the hashtag #CityMJSafeRide on Instagram or Twitter was entered for a “Happy New Year” prize package consisting of free bus passes and gift cards to local businesses.

The City of Moose Jaw congratulates Christa Colenutt (Twitter) and Mel Donaldson (Instagram) on being chosen winners out of all who submitted photos.

The City also thanks Wing In the New Year sponsors: SGI, Moose Jaw Police Service, Discover Moose Jaw, 800 CHAB, Country 100.7FM, MIX 103.9FM, Moosejawexpress.com and MooseJawtoday.com.
