MOOSE JAW, SK – 4891 kilograms of hazardous material was gathered by GFL Environmental at the City of Moose Jaw’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Day on Saturday, May 2, 2026, representing the largest amount of hazardous material ever collected at a HHW Day event.

The volume of hazardous waste collected at the first HHW Day of 2026 reflects a strong turnout and highlights the continued importance of these events. For comparison, HHW Day in May 2025 saw 3,458 kg of hazardous materials collected, and a further 2760 kg was collected at the September 2025 event.

Those residents who passed through the drop-off location at the City Complex, disposed of a wide variety of hazardous waste, including:

  • 27 kg of lithium batteries
  • 18 kg of lithium batteries in vapes
  • 1621 kg of paint
  • 37 kg of propane
  • 109 kg of flammable liquids

Lithium-ion batteries continue to be a major cause of landfill fires when disposed of with regular garbage, with these fires occurring when the batteries are crushed or punctured. Examples of items to keep out of regular garbage or recycling include cellphones, laptops, smart watches, vapes, scooters, earbuds, and rechargeable toys.

Aside from HHW Days, batteries can also be disposed of safely at:

  • The Moose Jaw Sanitary Landfill (at 1802 Caribou Street E) during regular operating hours. Residents are asked to advise staff of these items so they can be directed to the appropriate location.
  • Call2Recycle locations (found at recycleyourbatteries.ca)
  • SARCAN (52 Highland Road)

If you have any questions about hazardous materials, you can call the City Complex at 306-694-4448 or visit Let’s Talk Trash on MooseJaw.ca or on the free City of Moose Jaw app.

The second HHW Day for 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, August 29.
