Climate Risk Assessment

The City of Moose Jaw has begun work on a Climate Risk Assessment and Climate Adaptation Plan designed to help our community prepare for future weather-related risks and ensure that critical infrastructure and services remain resilient for years to come.

The Climate Risk Assessment is funded through a grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund, with additional support from the Wakamow Valley Authority.

The Assessment will:

• examine how weather-related events such as extreme heat, heavy rainfall, drought, wildfire smoke, and other climate impacts could affect City infrastructure, operations, services, and residents.
• Identify areas of risk and help guide future planning and investment decisions.
• Improve the City's readiness for future infrastructure funding opportunities, as many federal grant programs require climate risk and adaptation planning as part of the application process.

The project also advances the City's Strategic Plan, particularly the Sustainable Infrastructure and Environmental Stewardship pillar, by helping the City better understand potential risks to municipal infrastructure, facilities, and services.

As part of this work, residents are invited to participate in public surveys to share their experiences, concerns, and priorities.

Feedback from the first survey (Aug. 27-September 13) will help determine focus areas for the climate risk assessment. The second survey (scheduled for later this fall) will focus on identifying practical actions to address the identified priority areas.

Separate from the Climate Risk Assessment Project, the City of Moose Jaw’s Climate Action Plan is a long-term, action-driven plan designed to  deliver both economic and environmental benefits and showcase the City of Moose Jaw as a municipal climate change leader. 

Developing a Climate Action Plan and having shovel-ready projects will also put the City in a favourable position when exploring funding opportunities available to municipalities through provincial and federal climate change strategies.

• Prioritize capital energy upgrades based on return on investment and GHG reduction impact.
• Expand use of predictive maintenance and real-time alerting systems.
• Continue exploring grant and financing opportunities to support sustainable infrastructure
